COS supports a broad range of community-enriching initiatives that target the most vulnerable in society and provides them with opportunities to make lasting changes in their quality of life.
Homelessness and Poverty COS strongly supports Calgary’s 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness through investment in several participating nonprofit organizations. In addition to COS’ long-time direct funding of the Calgary Homeless Foundation, we sponsor the Sundial Project, an affordable housing initiative of the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre (the “DI”). Through the Sundial Project, the DI supports its clients in maintaining housing over the long-term and avoiding returning to the shelter system. Inn from the Cold is another partner COS proudly supports in its efforts to end family homelessness. Most recently, we provided funding for a construction project to build a wheelchair and stroller-accessible open and welcoming front entrance for the guests who use the facility each day. By removing the literal entry barriers to the Inn, clients will have easier access to the many support services offered by the Inn.
COS’ Community initiatives also include supporting organizations that are dedicated to helping individuals and families address the root causes of and overcome poverty. We are a long-standing supporter of Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS), which provides programs that focus on health care and education for Calgary’s most vulnerable. COS formalized our commitment to CUPS in 2011 with a $500,000 donation to support its expansion. Our funds are directed towards building bright, open learning and development spaces for participants of all ages to learn strategies to overcome poverty and achieve independence. Family Violence and Abuse Family violence is the most prevalent social issue facing Calgary today. In addition to funding preventative programs such as those offered by YouthLink that raise awareness of family violence, COS contributes to the efforts of organizations in Calgary that are working hard to help victims of family violence and abuse, such as the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter. Our annual commitment to the Shelter supports its in-house Childcare Program which provides safe, convenient and specialized care for children who have experienced and/or witnessed family violence and abuse.
