As an oil sands pioneer, Syncrude has a long history of innovation on which to build future successes in meeting the challenges of oil sands development. Syncrude has been active in the research and development of new technologies and innovations to reduce its impact on the environment and improve operating efficiencies for over 30 years. Through its commitment to finding new and better ways to develop this valuable resource, Syncrude has developed many of the technologies that have become industry standards.
Today, Syncrude invests about $60 million per year -- of which over half is centred on envrionmental improvements - in the industry’s only dedicated R&D program.

About 85 scientists, technologists and support staff work towards tomorrow’s oil sands advancements in a state-of-the-art analytical laboratory.
Industry Collaboration Initiatives
In 2012, a number of oil sands producers formed Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance ("COSIA"), focused on accelerating the pace of improving environmental performance in Canada’s oil sands. The creation of COSIA builds on the work done by both oil sands industry members and research and development organizations such as the Canadian Oil Sands Network for Research and Development, the Oil Sands Leadership Initiative and the Oil Sands Tailings Consortium. COSIA’s goal is to bring together industry, government, academia and the public to improve measurement, accountability and environmental performance in the oil sands. Both Syncrude and Canadian Oil Sands are members of COSIA
